California Department of Water Resources - Southern District

Recreation Planning Program

Program Overview

The Davis-Dolwig Act of 1961 (California Water Code Sections 11900-11925) provided that recreation and fish and wildlife preservation and enhancement be included as part of the State Water Project. Specifically, the Act requires the Department of Water Resources to develop and implement plans to fully use the recreation and fish and wildlife enhancement potentials of State-constructed water projects and to periodically reexamine trends affecting completed developments.

Recreation Areas in Southern District

SailboatIn fulfillment of this requirement, the Department has provided Recreation Areas for enjoyment by the public at reservoirs of the State Water Project. At the reservoirs in Southern California--Castaic Lake, Pyramid Lake, Silverwood Lake, and Lake Perris--a wide range of activities are available at the Recreation Areas. As part of the program, the Southern District conducts a periodic reassessment of recreation information from each reservoir, recommends the facilities that will be needed in the future, and coordinates the planning of these facilities. Operation and maintenance of the facilities is by other agencies.

Special features are Vista del Lago Visitors Center at Pyramid Lake, Regional Indian Museum at Lake Perris, and Visitors Center at Silerwood Lake.
