Program Overview In conjunction with headquarters, the Southern District collects and analyzes urban and agricultural water use data for utilization in water supply and demand investigations such as the California Water Plan updates. The District also evaluates the impacts that current and future water conservation has or is expected to have on demands. For the urban water use, monthly and annual data on groundwater, surface water, and imported water supplies and metered deliveries are collected for more than 200 urban retail water agencies in Southern California. The District tracks the demands for approximately 100 agencies annually. On the agricultural side, the Southern District operates evaporation pan stations to collect evaporation and climatological data that are used in the derivation of growing season evapotranspiration rates for selected crops and landscape materials. Evapotranspiration is the amount of water lost from the soil surface (evaporation) plus the amount of water used by plants (transpiration). In the past, the District collected and analyzed crop applied water data for use in the Department's Bulletin 113 series. Current Activities With assistance from headquarters, the Southern District conducts annual surveys of urban retail water agencies for monthly groundwater, surface water, and imported water supply data. Databases are being developed with the results from each survey. For agricultural water use data, the District operates and maintains evaporation pan collection stations alongside stations of the California Irrigation Management Information System in the City of Port Hueneme in Ventura County and near the City of Rancho California in Riverside County. The District also receives data from evaporation pans in Imperial Valley, which are read by local cooperators. |
